Ratna Chatterjee is a poetess, short story writer, and author. The eldest daughter of the renowned Bengali writer, Jarasandha (Charu Chandra Chakrabarti). One of the famous feature film, Bandini, is based on a Bengali novel, Tamasi, written by Jarasandha (Pen name).
Ratna Chatterjee has inculcated her father's genre of writing that is inspired by real-life experiences. She has always thanked her father for being the spark that ignited the writer in her. Being an avid reader herself, she is always encircled by books that have proven very useful for shaping her as an individual in her younger years. She has a BA degree with honors, which was a big feat in itself during those years.
The sacred thread of marriage makes a woman fulfill different duties. During these years, when she was immersed in her domestic chores, a visit by her father acted as a catalyst for her first Bengali novel, "Jodi Jantem" (If I Knew). As you say when a writer picks up the pen, the pen never stops writing till all the thoughts and expressions are poured out. She started writing the novel on Jan 2, 1992 and completed it in 4.5 months.
Ratna Chatterjee strongly believes that all animals have inherent worth. Apart from being an author and poet, she is also an animal welfare activist. She takes part in various welfare activities in and around Mumbai and has rescued various abandoned animals.
 
Whenever you meet her and start a discussion about animals, she says "animal welfare matters to me".
