After passing out from school as a Science student, he moved to Economics, influenced greatly by one of the leading economists of his time, Dr. Vijay Kelkar. Thereafter, he earned his MBA degree from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta majoring in Finance & Systems before entering the corporate world through CESC, working in an area that always fascinated him – infrastructure.
After getting a solid grounding in the commercial, corporate planning and MIS functions of the utility, he moved to Tata Consultancy Services to help develop their Utility Practice. Here, he worked across multiple geographies and domains, including water and electricity, and was exposed to different jurisdictions and their varied regulatory practices.
Subsequently, he moved to Saudi Arabia to work closely with the electricity and water sector, in various capacities. In many ways, this has been the culmination of a journey that started off with a young man’s dream and is now being fulfilled by helping to transform that to reality.

“Fly till they shoot you down” is tale of an intensely personal journey, so unique as to be almost unbelievable. Arriving in London with 4 pounds in his pocket, spending his second night in a cold telephone booth, his adult life started on the worst possible foot that you could imagine. Everything that could go wrong, it did for him. However, all this was not enough to curb the fighter in Igloo, as after every blow dealt by Fortune, he had the mental resil
However, all this was not enough to curb the fighter in Igloo, as after every blow dealt by Fortune, he had the mental resilience to shake it off and rise again. Ultimately, things began to come together – at times in almost fairy tale fashion. The skies cleared, but dark clouds almost always were there on the horizon. They have defined Igloo’s life for all of nearly seven decades. Trials and tribulations have challenged him at almost every turn.
The book charts his journey from his arrival in chilly London a few days after his 21st birthday, and takes you on a roller coaster of a journey across the oilfields of Digboi, the struggles at Kolkata, the challenges of London and beyond to the love of his family, the thrills of being a self-made man – all in all, a simply amazing smorgasbord of life itself.
At the end of the book, the reader will be left wondering – Could all this really have been true? How is it possible that one person travelled all these roads, up and down, so topsy-turvy, in one lifetime? This book is as honest an attempt to capture this scarcely unbelievable journey, as could be.

Trials and tribulations have challenged him at almost every turn, but that has not, in any way and ever, deflected him. The book charts out his professional journey from his early days in Asiatic Oxygen all the way to becoming one of the most respected cryogenic specialists in the country, literally working at temperatures that range from -271°C with liquid helium vessels to 1,700°C hanging above rivers of molten steel.
In many ways, Shankar’s entrepreneurial journey has mirrored the epic transformation that has been the story of India. The pangs of a country finding its feet in an unforgiving world, the willingness to sacrifice its today for a glorious tomorrow and most importantly, never lose sight of its destiny. That is India, that is Shell-N-Tube, and that is Shankar.
No journal about Shankar, or Shell-N-Tube, could be anywhere near complete without paying tribute to the stellar role played, for four decades, by his brother of another mother, Munjal Mehta. If there has been one constant in Shankar’s life, that gave him the strength to live his dream, it has been the unwavering faith and trust that Munjal and Shankar have shared between themselves, in their darkest hours as well as in their moments of glory. It has been a relationship that has gone way beyond partnership and friendship. It has been a bond that actually, defies definitions.
“Never Back Down” is not only the title of an intensely personal journal, it is a phrase that has defined Shankar’s life for all of nearly seven decades. When the idea of penning down my memories of a life, varied across many facets, first struck the author, it was then little more than ticking off an item in a wish list. When the idea of penning down my memories of a life, varied across many facets, first struck the author, it was then little more than ticking off an item in a wish list. Gradually, this changed to be a more substantial effort, to a journal of life, a legacy of sorts to people who have made a difference to his life, for better or worse.
When we think of human interactions and relationships, covering bonds of love, friendship, hatred and indifference, we soon realize that they are far more complex than the simple and deterministic laws of physics and chemistry. What we ‘know’ can only be understood through a multi-dimensional function of time, persona and many other unknown factors. Over the last six decades, the author has seen relationships change colour and shape, form and strength, not once but many times. Does that make us chameleons, in a sense? No, it is just that the human mind and heart resemble kaleidoscopes that keep generating different images, even if exactly the same stimulus is given, but at different points of time.
