Dr. Ven Hari is a retired Professor of Biotechnology, Genetics and Molecular Biology at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan where he taught General Genetics, Plant Biology and Virology as well as a laboratory course on Biotechnology and served as Director of the Biotechnology program. After receiving his PhD degree from the University Of Madras, India, he conducted advanced research at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, University of Adelaide, South Australia, the Chemical Genetics group in Virology at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona and the Department of Molecular Biology and Virus Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, California. He has published over 60 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and mentored a number of Graduate students.
At Wayne State University, one of the courses he taught as a fun interactive course was titled “Humanistic Botany” where he covered topics on History and biology of important medicinal and crop plants and dealt briefly on ancient herbal medicine and the discovery of plant-based drugs. After retirement in 2009, he studied various books on nutrition, nutraceuticals and how they are related to prevent disease and ensure good health and in the process he also studied various forms of Indo-Iranian-arabic, Greek, Amazonian, Australasian and other systems based on medicinal plants, crops, spices, vegetables, exotic fruits and vegetables. These studies resulted in the writing of this book.
