भाषा का यह स्वभाव होता है कि वह अपने बहुत से शब्दों को युगानुरूप बदलती चलती है और फिर वही अर्थ रूढ़ हो जाता है – ऐसा अंग्रेज़ी के साथ भी हुआ, हिन्दी के साथ भी और उर्दू के साथ भी। किन्तु जब कोई शब्द धर्म की किसी उदात्त भावना का बोधक एवं प्रतीक हो और नए सामाजिक परिवेश में अपना मूल अर्थ खो कर विपरीत अर्थ में रूढ़ होने लगे, तब उसके मूल अर्थ की पुनर्प्रतिष्ठा आवश्यक हो जाती है। यह कार्य किसी समाज-सुधारक का हो न हो पर ‘क़लम के सिपाही’ का अवश्य होता है, क्योंकि वह कथा में ढाल कर अपनी बात सीधे पाठक के हृदय तक पहुंचा देता है। ‘जिहाद’ ऐसा ही एक शब्द है – मूल अर्थ सत्य के लिए असत्य के विरुद्ध संघर्ष, किन्तु दुर्भाग्य से यह आतंकवाद का पर्याय बन गया है – जिसका परिणाम घृणा, हिंसा, प्रतिहिंसा है। अतः ऐसे वातावरण में याक़ूब यावर का यह उपन्यास साहित्य क्षेत्र में वही कार्य करेगा जो रिसते घावों पर शीतल लेप करता है। जिहाद के मूल अर्थ की स्थापना के साथ साथ यह उपन्यास यथार्थ के धरातल से उठ कर एक आदर्श की स्थापना भी करता है। बाबरी मस्जिद के शहीद कर दिये जाने के पश्चात निराशा में डूबा युवा मुस्लिम मन किस प्रकार घृणा और प्रतिशोध की सीढ़ियों पर चढ़ कर अंततः राष्ट्र-प्रेम के उदात्त शिखर पर पहुंचता है, संघर्ष इसी तथ्य की सशक्त कथा और सही समय पर आया एक मधुर उपन्यास है, जिसे पढ़ने वाले निश्चय ही एक बार पुनः उस भाईचारे के मार्ग का दर्शन कर सकेंगे जो कभी हम भारतीयों की थाती था।

            Yaqoob Yawar, who holds the equal command in Hindi and Urdu, has also presented a Hindi translation of his novels Jihad and Dilmun for Hindi readers. Yaqoob Yawar is currently working as the Head of the Urdu Department, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
