This text is a trans-creation of Sirupanchamoolam, a work from the Sangam literature of the 6th century classified under 'Pthinenkilkanakku' of Sangam literature. The original poems were composed in Tamil by the poet Kariyaasan, who possessed a deep knowledge of Tamil literary tradition.
A defining feature of his work is his concise structure: each moral teaching is articulated in just four lines. In these verses, the poet uses a powerful analogy, comparing five medicinal roots that cure physical diseases to five core ethical principles that heal and guide human conduct. He instructs his disciples on how to live a life grounded in morality and ethics.
This English version captures the essence of Kariyaasan's poems in plain language. The translator has understood the original meaning and presents it in a free verse style, preserving the core wisdom of the ancient text.
