Tides and Turnings Poems and Nature Notes

Author Name: Satish Bhalerao | Format: Paperback | Genre : Poetry | Other Details

Tides and Turnings is a collection that moves between the quiet observation of the natural world and the deeper currents of memory, loss, and renewal. Born from daily walks along tidal flats and estuaries, these poems and prose pieces trace the rhythms of water, weather, and light, and the ways they mirror our own inner landscapes.

The first section, "Tides and Turnings," gathers poems written over five years, organized into five thematic movements: the constant flux of tides and estuaries; the turning of seasons; the interplay of light and darkness; acts of remembrance; and the quiet work of the inner life. These poems are grounded in specific places, the Welsh coast, the French countryside, but reach toward universal experiences of change, stillness, and the search for meaning.

The second section, "Nature Notes," offers prose reflections that expand on themes from the poems. These pieces record encounters with landscape, weather, birds, and moments of stillness. They are meditations as much as observations, attempts to understand what the natural world might be saying when we take the time to listen.

Together, the poems and prose form a conversation between the immediate and the timeless, between the particular detail of a place and the larger mysteries of existence. They invite the reader to slow down, to notice, and to find in the ordinary movements of the world something luminous and essential.

This is a book for those who walk, who watch, who wonder. It is for anyone who has felt the pull of the tide, the turning of a season, or the sudden clarity that comes when we stand still long enough to truly see.

Satish Bhalerao

Satish Bhalerao is a retired surgeon who worked in the British National Health Service. Born in India and educated at Barnes School, he brings to his poetry a unique perspective shaped by two cultures and a lifelong attention to the details of the natural world.

His poetry draws on daily walks along the tidal flats and estuary near his home, where the constantly changing patterns of water, sand, and sky become meditations on time, memory, and the larger mysteries of existence. These observations, combined with reflections on childhood, family, and the turning of seasons, form the heart of this collection.

Satish is also the author of ‘Googly Maps and Other Stories’ and ‘Deolali Days - Stories from a Boarding School’. He lives in Wales.
