Heemal Handoo Bhat
Heemal Handoo Bhat has been an educator for more than 35 years, but first and foremost, she is a student of life. Born in the bounteous Kashmir valley, she spent most of her early years in Mysore and pursued her higher education in Hyderabad. Her work and studies took her on a vivacious journey across the world, where she learnt one of her most important lessons — to learn something, you must be willing to unlearn first. She has always tried to incorporate these learning from her travels into her teaching lessons.
But, no matter where she went, her heart stayed rooted in Kashmir.
Heemal is a recipient of the prestigious CBSE Teachers’ Award 2019-20 by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India, and the State Teachers’ Award 2020 by the Directorate of Education, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. However, her biggest award is the smile on a student’s face in the classroom. She finds solace in knowing that she made a difference in the world, one student at a time.
