Subrat SaurabhAuthor of Kuch Woh PalWhat does it mean to grieve something that never was?
Fairy follows the breaking of a heart that was never truly made. A saga of poems, it explores longing in her ugliest and most beautiful forms. Across twenty works with unseemly names, the chapters take you through enchantment, delusion, and all the intricate emotions that come with predestined heartbreak. Simple feelings take on complex, wonderful forms when spoken to; these poems aim to speak to you and bring to life every crease in your heart.
Fairy isn’t, however, a criticism of he who loves to love or she who loves to be loved; it is rather a celebration of the eternal symbiosis of an uneven, unfair yearning. Like all art, there are stories and meanings to be evoked from every page, every blot of ink. If read over and over, if pondered upon, these stories and meanings will speak to you. And, if any of these words have been heard by you, then this book will have fulfilled her purpose.
When the Fairy’s wings glitter, remember that only you can see her as you do. The words you hear are then not hers, neither are they mine: they are stories and meanings born of your heart.
Yash Moitra
Yash Moitra is an up-and-coming writer who explores complex emotions through wide-ranging and often unrelated topics. Describing longing as hypothermia, farewells as nuclear explosions, and food as a fallen sapling, Yash’s writing is untethered and vivid in its imagination. As an extensive user of Biblical allusions and pop culture in his writing, he remains inspired by the works of Oscar Wilde and Sylvia Plath. Though poetry is his preferred mode of expression, Moitra regularly features prose in his monthly school magazine and, more frequently, makes puns that his friends describe as ‘acidic’ in nature.
Outside of writing, Yash annually represents Team India at several invitational Debate tournaments, including those organised by Harvard University, Oxford Union, Cambridge University, and the Indian Institute of Technology. His pursuits in the field of argumentation extend to Model United Nations, where he frequently adjudicates and presides over massive committees at premier national conferences. Recently, he was chosen by the Harvard International Relations Council to chair the most selective committee at their 2022 conference.
Solving real issues, Moitra is an active youth representative at the UN High Commission for Refugees, where he helps shape international policy and improve living conditions for refugees around the world. He also continues to work with Google Maps, refining satellite imagery modelling to help put Rural India on the map. He works closely with his community as well, where he has conducted numerous sanitary pad donation drives. During the peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic, he was a Vaccination Officer at a local hospital and oversaw the immunization of more than 5,000 comorbid citizens. When the city was battling a devastating death wave, he founded a convalescent plasma donation service that helped more than 700 people and received national coverage on All India Radio.
Throughout his art, he features themes from these experiences; his works are, in his words, little devotions to the people and phases of his life.
