I Did What I Had To Do

Author Name: Anjana Dutt | Format: Paperback | Genre : Biographies & Autobiographies | Other Details

“A remarkable book about a remarkable personality—unique in India’s post-independence economic history. Madan’s journey in building an Indian MNC straddles 20th century conservatism and 21st century globalisation, and is a must read for entrepreneurs of all hues.”
- PD Rai  Former Lok Sabha MP, Sikkim

“Madan’s story would help millions of entrepreneurs across the world. The book will motivate the reader to develop the ability to take risk cautiously and will satiate his thirst for constant learning. This thought-provoking book will be a very useful resource for students and libraries globally.”
- Dr Sharad Sarin, Former Senior Professor XLRI, Jamshedpur

“This is a fascinating book about a honourable man who prioritizes integrity and regard for others over self-preservation, and not so as to seek recognition but as a matter of an inner stance of self-regard. Unsurprisingly we read about a list of things for which he is then honoured such as being trusted and loved by his team, having his advice taken by mentees, and people foregoing economic benefit to work for him. Here finally is a book about a capitalism of regard for others before oneself.”
 - Errol D’Souza, Director IIM, Ahmedabad

“The biography explores the strategic and tactical business decisions made in the crucible of the most challenging situations: setting up a collaboration with a world leader in the pre-liberalisation era, establishing a marketing organisation worldwide, making international acquisitions, and successfully handling seemingly unworkable international investments. The ethics, values, mission and vision of Madan are clearly discernible.”
- Dr Abhinandan Jain, Former Professor, IIM Ahmedabad

Anjana Dutt

Writer, graphic designer, published poet, pianist, soprano, film maker, interior designer, single mom biographer...you are as likely to find her photographing her beloved Labrador, as you are to seeing her furiously writing an article or film script.

25 years in advertising, at Ogilvy and later J Walter Thompson, she quit the industry as a Senior Creative Director, in charge of the films Division in Calcutta, with several awards underarm. Launching herself anew as a Creative Consultant, her choice of independent projects have been as varied as her eclectic taste in music.

‘Professor Extraordinaire’, published in 2021 as a posthumous tribute to the venerable professor of IIM-Ahmedabad Dr VL Mote, countless product manuals and branding communication for a variety of clients, an International cookbook titled ‘A Dash of Desi’ designed, shot and put together for a bevy of Asian ladies in Lafayette, Indiana, Movie posters for Hollywood productions...you get the drift.

After working closely with Madan Mohan Mohanka, Anjana Dutt found herself intrigued by his story and spent two years interviewing him, his friends, classmates, peers, siblings and colleagues to create this Biography.
