The highest prevalence of depressive disorders have been observed in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, and Telangana in the high cocio-demographic Index (SDI) state group; Andhra Pradesh in the middle SDI state group; and Odisha in the low SDI state group. A high prevalence of depressive disorders were seen in females (3.9 per cent) than males (2.7 per cent). Depression is a common mental disorder with over 280 million people of all ages, an estimated 3.8 per cent of the population suffering from it globally, as per the World Health Organization (WHO). It is expected that in the next ten years, depression will put more burden on nations than any other disease, as per World Bank.
