The subject of Finite Elements has its origins in Structural Truss and Beam design in Civil and Mechanical design . In the next few decades it found applications in the Automotive industry and then into Fluid Mechanucs and CFD along with Heat and mass Transfer. Today it is an indispensable tool in Design. It is basically an energy minimisation technique.
Students should find this easy to understand as the concepts are gradually introduced without complicated mathematics. A knowledge of matrix methods would be helpful if not essential
