The Joining day

by Srihari Surisetty

Number two. This number is having a great significance in everything. There will be always two shades/sides/phases whatever field or thing we take; it could be a thing, person, place etc.

For an instance, there is a person who posses both good characteristics and bad characteristics. Here person is one, but he has two shades/sides. The nature of characteristics of a person always does depend on the way look at him. For you, he might be a good person based on the situations you had with him. In the same way he would be a bad for me based on the situations.

A side of the city which sparks as a posh city with the thrill and excitement factors for the people who do have enough facilities, the other side of the city shows up as a different world for the people who don’t possess enough facilities.

Wondering why I am telling all this! Yeah. Let’s get into the story.

After landing in Majestic (bus stand), one of the largest in south India which was built by a king of Bangalore and named after him which I had ear from someone. I was looking around the place where I end up seeing only people from different places of the country, I was feeling nervous and nostalgic as this was my first visit all alone to a city other than my hometown. I slipped into the pockets of my trouser to take out my mobile which I was using since graduation which I got as a gift from my father for one of my birthdays. I called up my cousin who is staying in a place somewhere in Jayanagar. Meanwhile, I called up my home and said that I reached safely without any hassles.

After enquiring about my whereabouts, he came to me after one hour and took me with him. After reaching the parking lot, I could see lot of bikes with my very eyes which I used to see only in televisions ads. He vanished inside the place and came out with new Yamaha FZ-R. I congratulated and asked him about the bike in which guys always passionate about.

I had left no choice to my cousin to close his mouth with the doubts I was enquiring about city life. On the way I could see lot buildings of IT companies and others constructed by builders like raheja, salarapuria. I was merely looking for IT companies as I was searching for an IT job made me to come here, like me there would be a bunch of people from different places of country come here to Bangalore, Silicon Valley of India.

We reached the cousin's room which was on the third floor of Shree Apartments after sliding into 4th main, 9th cross. We had a nice body massage on the roads with the speed breakers; only god must know why they built these, either to avoid accidents or to make people sick after driving. Room was reflecting the typical bachelor aroma. As two of his friends went to home for a holiday, flat was empty. After daily routine we had gone to a nearby sagar hotel for breakfast and had one plate idli and butter dosa by cousin. He was telling about the companies’ whereabouts how to reach the place, buses I need to board. He asked my resume and told to send it to his office mail id. Cousin immediately took out his mobile and touching the screen and I was wondering what he was up to. My mobile beeped, it was a sms alert, I got a text from his number with office mail id. He left in a jiffy after completing the breakfast leaving me at the apartment with the keys.

Apartment was located in the midst of houses with great architectural views, anterior with garden and expensive cars. I could enjoy the view from the room balcony, I noticed a small baby with a smile playing with her father running towards him with her cute little legs and spreading her hands to him. I took my phone to check the email id sent by cousin, I was thinking that phone was so nice at looks with complete touch. I found from internet that it was HTC wildfire and mine was Nokia 1100. I have taken rest for some time and started preparing for the interviews with the help of Google.

As I registered in job portals, I got a mail from a consultancy for tomorrow which was located in a place called brigade road. In the evening, cousin entered the room with a face of tiredness. After settling down, I have enquired him about whereabouts of the consultancy, he gave information about the buses and how to reach there.

I reached the consultancy with my resume and certificates. The people told they would call after the short listing the candidates based on the performance in the written exam. It was past 12:30 in the afternoon, to eat something I was searching for a hotel where I could find something.

I had a glance of a big building with the entry on all the sides, people were coming out of it with the bags full. The girls were glittering, with their branded sleeveless tops and bottoms which were right above the knees, were they angels just landed from heaven that was all I could say. They were holding the expensive mobiles in their hands. It had some letters scribbled on entrance of the building which says "G A R U D A". After entering I could see lot of franchises of the brands which are famous throughout the world. I thought this is an awesome place to hang out. I have seen so many girls giggling with their companions, of course boys. They all were wearing the attires what heroines in the films wear. I have seen school boys and girls were walking with the iPods and iPhones in their hands, I wondered why school going kids need such costly gadgets. I walked into food court which was on the second floor, was checking what food could be better. I went for dosa. I went back to home.

I have seen my cousin with a girl while entering the street. She was good looking and giggling with him. "I would also get good lass once I get a decent job", I thought. After dropping the girl, he took me to a restaurant for dinner which was looking like a 3 star hotel which I had never been before. While entering it, one beautiful lady came to us and guided to a table of 2. After settling down, he understood my gesture and said he got promotion and treat was for the same. Waiter thought that I am going to place the order, handed over the menu card to me. I have checked the prices. I thought the price of one dish would fetch a good food sufficient for one day for a small family in my home town. After sometime food was served hot and I was trying to have it with hands, then he interrupted me and said about dinning etiquette when you are with a group of people, officials and team meetings. He paid the bill with his credit card which was a limit of six digit number. My cousin explained how a credit card works.

Next day I was having an interview and preparing myself with sureness on me that I would crack the interview to get into the company and make myself available to the world of all the excitements which were bind within the city life.

Cousin wished me good luck for the interview while he was leaving to office and slipped into the lift in a trice. As per the guidance by cousin I reached the place called Whitefield where I had seen all IT companies in big buildings. I could feel why this city is called as largest IT hub with 200+ companies.

I entered the campus along hundreds of students which is having enough greenery to draw the attention of the officials. Security showed us the way to written test hall. We had given the exam. Later they announced that they would call the people whoever shortlisted. “I would get for sure”, I thought.

Two days later, I got a call from the company asking me to attend the next round tomorrow. I was cherished and said to myself, still another 2 rounds to go to get through the interview. I had given the remaining rounds and was waiting for the big day. One cute lady walked into the room where we were waiting and announced few names. Viswanadh swami was one of them which happened to be my name, I rejoiced with happiness and completed all the formalities and submitted requisites.

I walked out of the room with a swelled heart with happiness. I called my family members and to my cousin who supported me behind and close friends. My sister got tears of happiness after hearing the good news.

I came back to the room with a small box of sweets which I picked on the way. My cousin walked in and congratulated me for the success and enquired about the package, company, timings, joining date.

My first day in office went fine with exchanges of names with others who joined on the same day. Two people walked in to the hall where we were waiting, started telling about the company history and future endeavours. They walked us through the campus showing all the blocks, and details of them. Finally I became successful with what I was looking for.

Days were passing. One daisy kind of girl was passing by my bay; she noticed me staring at her and said “hi”. I too said “hello”. After few days I met the same girl at a coffee vending machine. From there we started talking regularly in phone. I forgot to tell that I had bought a new phone of brand HTC with my first salary. Time is filled up with trainings and hanging out with friends on the weekends.

One fine day, my manager took our team which comprises of three boys and two girls, both are good looking with a nice posture to a team lunch. We had delicious food, I didn’t miss my dining etiquette and manager was making me feel comfortable with his sense of humour. I felt very happy for getting a good team to work for. Everyone was friendly and supportive.

Before the turning of one year in the company, I bought gifts for my family members and bought the things I wished for myself, including bike which was Yamaha SZ-R with my lassie on the back of the seat holding my back, laptop, fossil watch and other accessories. Last but not the least and the important than all of the above, a beautiful girl friend, the one I started friendship at the coffee machine. Without a girl, life would be certainly boredom in a cosmopolitan city like Bangalore.

I became a critical resource in the team with my hard work and efficiency. I got few rewards and awards for my exceptional contribution to the team for the delivery of the work. Down the line I became successful in life both personally and professionally. I made my family well settled after clearing all the debts which were small though. I hang out with my friends in glittering restaurants whenever we would meet. I paid the bill with my credit card.

I would look at myself as a successful person in life who transformed from a person who doesn’t know most of the things. Life teaches everything, it surely gives success. You just need to wait patiently for your time to come. For few people, it took four months to get the job, for a friend of mine it took 3 years to get the job.

Life always shows two ways, either good or bad. Your life would purely depend on the choice you have taken in the early stages. I always think that I had taken a good way which made me successful now. I have seen both sides of the city with my point of view. There could be some other views for the people who want to become an entrepreneur or a business man.

My gaze at the calendar came to an end and my thoughts got disturbed after seeing a mail from the HR department congratulating for the successful completion of 4 years in the company. The date is today November 8th which was my joining day four years back which had changed my life.

“The life of a one always does depend on the way we look at it either good or bad”.
