Cal and Jeff

On the island of Ogygia lived Calypso. She could never leave the island, it was her curse. She would just live on forever on the island , her prison, all alone, with no way in or out of the island.
Just like that, one bright sunny morning, Calypso woke up and found a boy lying at the bank of the ocean. She pulled him up and kept slapping him until he woke up.
The boy sat up straight and looked around.

"Where the hell am I?!", shrieked the boy.

"Ogygia",said Calypso, staring at the boy's face

"Who? Who are you? How did I get here?!"

"I am Calypso...And I don't know how you got here. My guess is that it was probably a shipwreck."

"Wait, you Calypso?! Like the Calypso? The Greek goddess who was banished?"

Calypso pursed her lips. "Yes that's me"

"Oh! I am Jeffery. My loved ones call me Jeff"

"Hmm, okay but we need to send you back home"

"Yeah sure! How do I get back home?! The last thing I remember is drowning",said Jeffrey

"Well, as a punishment, I get handsome guys washed up at my shore. And they can never stay because they have to get back and I get heartbroken every time."

"That's horrible!",said Jeffery

"But what I don't understand is your reason to be here!"

"What?"

"Because you're not even good looking!"

"Umm...that's not a very nice thing to say"

Calypso got up and said,"Just wait here, a boat will appear here and....uh...it will take you home"

"Okay",said Jeffery.

Calypso came back after an hour and found the boy still sitting where she had left him.

"Oh for God's sakes! Why haven't you left yet?!"

"The boat didn't appear",said Jeffery

Calypso looked around, and there was no boat. She had no other option so she took Jeffery with her, but she did not let him enter her house. She gave him food, a change of clothes and she gave him blankets so that he could sleep outside at night.

When they woke up in the morning, there was still no boat at the shore.

"Maybe something is wrong",said Jeffery

"No, I understand what's happening", said Calypso smirking. "When I want a person to stay, then only does a boat appear to take then away. But I don't like you and I want you to leave so now the boat won't appear! That's messed up!"

Jeffery didn't say anything.

"Okay, change of plans! We are going to build a boat and send you home in it",said Calypso, leading Jeffery to her house.

She got all the tools and the two of them got to work. Calypso mostly kept her mouth shut but Jeffery kept trying to lighten the mood.

"So, how did the Robot eat guacamole?"

"How?"

"With computer chips!",said Jeffery and started laughing

"I don't get it", said Calypso. Ofcourse, she didn't know anything about robots or computers

"Okay, hear this one",said Jeffery. "Why did the scarecrow get promoted?"

"Okay, why?"

"Because he was outstanding in the field",said Jeffery and cracked up.

Calypso tried not to smile. But she did. When Jeffery saw the smile, it made him really happy.

"So the cold lady does have a heart"

"If I didn't have a heart, I wouldn't have been helping you build a boat to help you return back home",said Calypso

"But you are only helping me because you don't want me here....I guess if I had been a little more muscular or taller then maybe you would have wanted me to stay"

Calypso didn't answer so Jeffrey didn't push.

"Can I call you Cal?",asked Jeffery

"Absolutely not",she replied

The next morning Jeffrey saw Calypso dipping in the ocean and coming back up. She did it several times and it made Jeffery curious.

"Hey what are you doing?",asked Jeffery

Calypso came out of the water, and her smile faded.
"I'm swimming. What does it look like?"

"No I mean you were getting inside the water then coming out, laughing, it just looked fun"

"Well, it's just....the ocean is pretty beautiful inside",said Calypso.

"Wow...can I have a look?"

"Depends on if you can hold your breath under water",said Calypso

"For how long?"

"One hour", replied Calypso

"Really?"

"No I'm joking, dummy!",said Calypso laughing. "

"Oh...wow...you have sense of humour too!"

"Well, You can't die on this island. The water won't kill you. It will form a protective bubble around you. You can stay inside water for as long as you want"

Jeffery thought he would try it out himself, so he went inside the ocean and after a few minutes he came out.

"Wow! It's amazing down there!", shouted Jeffery with such amazement on his face that it made Calypso smile.

Jeffery took Calypso's hand and pulled her inside the water with him. They both looked around. Jeffery pointed at a beautiful fish swimming by. They saw seahorses and stuff Jeffery couldn't even name

Finally they both surfaced after ten minutes.

"That was the most amazing experience I've had in a long time"

"Well, I see it everyday. The ocean is really beautiful inside. You should see those jelly fish at night. They glow up!",said Calypso with keen interest and she continued

"You didn't learn anything from it?",asked Jeffery with a smile

"Like what? About underwater creatures? I've learnt a lot! Those-"

"No, not about underwater creatures",said Jeffery holding Calypso's hands.

"Then?"

"The ocean.... it looks serene and calm on the outside....but you saw what's really inside of it and the outward appearance doesn't really matter now...does it? The beauty of the ocean is actually inside it, you just need to know where to look.... Appearances and looks doesn't really matter when your insides are rotten. But when you look at a person and they are not as attractive as you want them to be, you see if their insides are good...and if they are...then it's worth it...it's all worth it.",said Jeffrey with glimmer in his eyes. "I am not asking you to like me. But in the future, if you meet someone unattractive, remember my words. Don't let outward appearances deceive you. Just see if they are the right kind of person. If they are, they will give you the right kind of happiness. Just like the ocean"

Calypso didn't have anything to say. Jeffery got up and he went back to the yard, to continue building his boat.

After half an hour, Calypso came. She had puffy eyes and a red nose.

"Oh Calypso!", exclaimed Jeffery. "You're here! Just pass me that cutter please, i need to hold this wood like this"

"Come with me",said Calypso and she left without a word.

Jeffery frowned but he followed. Calypso took him back to the ocean bank and there a was a majestic boat waiting for him.

"Wow! Did you build this?",asked Jeffery, in awe.

"Uh...no"said Calypso, with her quivering lips. "It just appeared here"

Jeffery took a minute to process that. "Calypso...but you told me that the boat only appears when you fall it love with someone. That it's a sign that they have to leave..."

"Yes",said Calypso, avoiding eye contact

"Does it mean that you fell-"

"Stop!",said Calypso. "Just leave"

"But-"

"Please Jeff...this is my destiny"
It was the first time Calypso had taken his name.

Calypso looked at the boat then at Jeffery and she turned around, and made her way back to her house, barefooted.

Jeffery had to leave. He had a family to take care of. He got on the boat and he sailed away. He waited for Calypso to turn around...but she never turned. She never waved.
But little did he know, that she was just trying to hide her tears. She had fallen in love with Jeffery and that was the truth. There was this burning feeling inside Calypso's heart, she wished it was hate. But no, it was love
