This used to be hard to find. However, now the year and the whole censor information of Hindi films from 1931 to 2010 is available on the database website.
There is no official publication for this information. Also, this information changes from city to city as films having limited number of prints, cannot be released everywhere at once. Finding this information requires much more work. One can find it in the magazine reviews, magazine and newspaper ads, and, sometimes in the trade publications. All these sources are hard to come by.
Recently, SS and two of his co-workers published a book on the films running in the Madras theatres,
Films Showing in Madras Theatres (1941-1947), by MV Surender, N Ramaswamy and Prof Surjit Singh (2021)
In the book at hand, we present information about the stage shows, silents and talkies running in Bombay in 1931. We plan to cover the years 1931-1950 at least. This information is based on the Bombay Chronicle newspaper available on the Internet Archive website.
It is fascinating to follow the life of many films, some run for a long time, some only a few weeks, some move to other theatres. We found this information to be enjoyable to work with and fascinating.
We hope that our readers will also enjoy this nostalgia-inspiring work.

Group dancers are also called chorus or backup dancers. Clearly, without them most of the dance sequences would not be too interesting. Group dancers are also called chorus or backup dancers. Clearly, without them most of the dance sequences would not be too interesting. The reason is that solo performances by the lead characters are rare and usually occur in formal, classical dance settings. For an average movie-goer, these are not very appetizing. Most of the time, though, the main dancer or dancers have to be embedded in a matrix of backup dancers.
In the talkies, when the dances moved away from the temple or the court to other locations, a need arose for more dancers. These dancers were, unfortunately, very low in the movie industry hierarchy, just above the extras. The extras are the ones sitting in the cafeterias or in parties. You can actually recognize many of them who are common fixtures sometimes for years. Little bit above them are the unheralded group dancers. They are usually hired by dance directors, sometimes called the dance masters or simply masters. They work in groups, get to know each other and typically do not need much rehearsal. They work is reasonably hard, very enjoyable for those who love dancing and pays well, roughly about 5-10 times a secretarial or low-level desk clerk job.
Sadly not much has been written about them. One can forget about biographies, for the most part, even their names are unknown to an average film-goer.
This book is a small effort to name them and have their filmographies written down. Much work still needs to be done.
This book is about the lyricists of Hindi cinema. It not only includes well-known ones but also those lyricists who have written less but have given memorable songs to the listeners. The authors spent a lot of time researching and collecting details about those lyricists to incorporate their information. We hope the readers will find this rare informarion useful.

The project is an outgrowth of the massive Hindi Film Geet Kosh (1980-) series of books compiled by the first author. The website is planned to contain all the data in the Geet Kosh, suitably expanded and revised by including the latest information.
The whole history of the Geet Kosh may be read in the My Story section of the above-mentioned website. Suffice it to say that after the pioneering work of Firoze Rangoonwalla and BV Dharap, Geet Kosh was a unique and original compilation work expanding the earlier work in many directions.
The database on the website is divided into three section for convenience. The Censor Certificate section has the information about the censored films. The Filmography section has the information about film production and other details. The Song section has detailed information about the songs.
It is a work in progress.
This book is based on the Filmography Section of Hindi Talkies Feature Films from 1961 to 1970.

I have been trying all that I can do to describe my mother.
How can I forget all that she taught me about life love and more love?
Wasn't she a much greater teacher than any of the teachers who have taught me lessons about life?
Wasn't she even greater than God who I have been believing in for as many years as I have been living?
Wasn't she more beautiful than all the woman I have seen, met lived with, try to love, understand and have failed?

Wasn't she even greater than God who I have been believing in for as many years as I have been living?
Wasn't she more beautiful than all the woman I have seen, met lived with, try to love, understand and have failed?
Wasn’t she a simple but very powerful challenge for God, the god in whom she had all the faith in and believed in, even though he did not listen to her prayers, calls and cries?
Wasn't she a mother who was a glorious example for other mothers to follow?
Wasn't she a good daughter, a great sister and a saviour for all those who needed her help and she gave help to all those who needed help without asking any questions and without thinking about whether they deserved help or not?
On August 18th last was her 101st birthday and even as I think about her life, which was cut short by her God(?)
Cut short when she was only forty-five years old and had many other ambitions and dreams to fulfill.
I wish to make one more effort to sing the praises of my Maa because the more I praise her the more I want to praise her.
This little book is my offering and my prayer to my mother on her birthday.

I have been privileged to write about Amitabh Bachchan for the last fifty years and more . I have written about him when he was a nobody in Bombay

I have been privileged to write about Amitabh Bachchan for the last fifty years and more . I have written about him when he was a nobody in Bombay
I saw "Saat Hindustani" flop, but I saw this unusual tall actor succeed as an actor and even win a National Award for his performance.
I have been a close witness (thanks to him) to his rise and rise and the few falls in his illustrious career. I was there when that one nearly fatal accident on the sets of Manmohan Desai's "Coolie" almost killed him. I was witness to his lonely battle to fight back and emerge a victor in the face of the most grim odds and cruel circumstances.
And then I was there when he fought back as an actor. It will be fifty years and more since an unknown actor with an unusual name came to Indian Cinema and created a niche for himself. There has been only one Amitabh Bachchan whose name is etched on the sky of success and I don't think there will be another like him in the time and times to come, take or leave it, but that is my opinion about him which has lived with me for generations and I am sure will not leave me for generations to come.
I am extremely grateful for having the opportunity to live through the era of Amitabh Bachchan and this I swear is no intention to flatter a dear friend who has now growing beyond all praise and gratitude..
What more can I say about a friend who has always been a friend and I hope will be a friend as long as time and friendship lasts.

This book, therefore is not my attempt to show my knowledge about him and his many achievements. This book is only my earnest attempt to paint a portrait of the Dev I knew and who gave me all the privileged experiences to know him as closely as possible.
This book is a precious look into the life of a man who was born immortal. I believe that Dev was and is immortal, but what is wrong if I cannot forget any of his memories, which for me are more precious than the prayers I pray to all the other Devs I know and I now have met and I now don't have any interest of knowing any other Dev.
It was Khwaja Ahmad Abbas who picked up a post card I had written to him from a heap of fan mail that he used to get every day. It was that one post card that changed my life. I joined Screen on January 4, 1969 and left on August 7, 2007. It was the journey between 1969 and 2007 that made me know what the industry was and what the people who belonging do it were. What I had heard about them and what I saw and experienced with them was entirely different from what many said and believed about them.
This book is my tribute to all those who came across my path at different times and have lived with me and will live with me till the end of my life.

The other year, or more commonly date that people often mention is the date of the first release of the film. This date varies from city to city as films having limited number of prints, cannot be released everywhere at once. This was specially so in the early years. The film release information is not published in a unique source and requires much more work. One can find it in the magazine reviews, magazine and newspaper ads, and, sometimes in the trade publications. All these sources are hard to come by.
We were lucky to find issues of the Madras edition of the Indian Express online. One of us (MVS) clipped images from the online source and they were published here
http://hindi-films-songs.com/books/IndianExpress-FilmNewsArchive2.html
After some time, the second author (NR) gathered the film release information from this website in the form of a spreadsheet. This then was used to prepare the table in the present form.
Here one can follow the life of many famous and not so famous films in various theatres. Sometimes they run for a long time, sometime only a few weeks, sometimes they move to other theatres. We found this information to be enjoyable to work with and fascinating.
We hope that our readers will also enjoy this nostalgia-inspiring work.
Incontestably emotions dominate our life, lifestyle and approach towards life. This would mean that we live at the mercy of emotions. Does it mean that emotions dominate us ? Why do we give free hand to emotions to impact our thought process ? Deep contemplation awoke the dormant poet residing inside me who penned down words to portray a rainbow of emotions.

Until a few years ago most of did not know Edwina Violette (or Edu) by name. We only knew her as a background dancer in many Hindi songs. Famously, in the song ‘O Hasina Zulfonwali Jane Jahan’ from Teesri Manzil (1966) she appears in the beginning shaking her head and flaunting her long hair, before settling down on the letter C of the giant ROCKY sign. Famously, in the song ‘O Hasina Zulfonwali Jane Jahan’ from Teesri Manzil (1966) she appears in the beginning shaking her head and flaunting her long hair, before settling down on the letter C of the giant ROCKY sign. Thanks to the efforts of famous blogger Greta Kaemmer, the world ‘discovered’ her. One of us (SS) was so thrilled that he wrote his first book on Hindi films, Edu’s biography.
In preparation for the book, SS watched more than one hundred videos of her (put together by Tom Daniel), he was struck by the other faces in the background who danced in many of these songs. It occurred to him that a book should be written about them while we can still identify them.
So, SS requested his friend Narsingh D Agnish to watch all the videos and capture still images of her co-dancers. He painstakingly captured almost 1,000 images, of which about 500 were selected to be sent to Edu by email. She responded promptly identifying most of them and writing little notes about them in the bargain!
We have selected about 300 of those images for this book. We are thrilled that we have been able to put names to so many faces of her co-dancers.
All three of us loved working on this book, we hope you will enjoy it too and have the excitement of saying, “I know her, she is Pamela, Edu’s best friend. Or, I recognize him, he is Terence, Edu’s brother!”

If you are a fan of the Bollywood movies of the Golden Age, and who isn't, you must have wondered about all those dancers. I don't mean the famous ones such as Helen, Bela Bose, Minu Mumtaz, Laxmi Chhaya and Madhumati. I am talking about the other male and females mostly in the background, who almost never got close-ups, but were seen in almost every group dance.

You may have heard some of their names because, once in a while, they get a famous song or two to show their talents, for example, Herman Benjamin ('jaan pehchaan ho' from the film Gumnam). Or, because some of them become famous Choreographers, for example, Vijay-Oscar or Saroj Khan.
Do you know the long haired lady with a beautiful smile that shows up as the zulfonwaalee in the beginning of the song 'o haseenaa zulfonwaalee' from Teesri Manzil? She is later seen lying down on the crescent moon with her hair flowing and a tiny Helen far away. She is Edwina Violette, known as Edu on facebook, originally from Sankli Street, Byculla, now settled in London, UK.
This is the story of her amazing life, her adventures in Bollywood and her struggles to find happiness in a foreign land.
