Here, we have listed six of the most common Amazon scams and how to avoid them:
1. Gift cards
Scammers try to reach out to Amazon users via emails, phone calls, or social media channels and offer them a deep discount by using gift cards. It is not only Amazon gift cards but also the ones from other third parties, such as banks, credit card institutors, or another retail companies.
The truth is that Amazon gift cards can be used only on Amazon sites, and cannot be accepted as a payment method to other businesses.
How to avoid:
+ Pay no mind to those emails or callers
+ Do not claim Amazon gift cards outside of Amazon.com
+ Your gift card’s claim code is your property. Do not provide it to others. Otherwise, they will claim your code before it is covered by other protectors.
2. Online listings
Fraudsters will call themselves Amazon staff and offer you a steep discount for listed goods and services. To make things more plausible, the fraudsters accept Amazon gift cards as parts of payment. You pay and wait for the shipping. Unfortunately, the orders never arrive, and it turns out that you cannot contact the sellers.
How to avoid:
+ Never do business with any sellers that contact and direct you off Amazon.
+ Do not send money to a seller who claims that Amazon will guarantee your transactions and refund the money if you are not happy with the products and services. You will be automatically protected when paying via the Amazon platform and follow Amazon payment’s policy.
3. Amazon job offerings
Amazon is offering an attractive salary package for its employees. Therefore, many people want to work there. Understanding that high job demand, Amazon job fraudsters abuse this by posting false employment information and calling you for an attractive job offer under the name of Amazon hiring staff or agencies. In exchange for that, they will require that you make a commission payment or pay an upfront fee for processing in the form of a credit card payment, bank transfer, or even Amazon gift cards.
How to avoid:
+ Check Amazon.com/jobs if you are looking for a job
+ No fee or commission required for involvement in the recruitment process.
4. Phishing-related activities
This is the most dangerous scam, in which they steal your important personal information, such as social security number, bank account password, or credit card info. There are many steps/ways to implement this fraud:
+Contacting you via email/phone under the name of Amazon customer service’s staff.
+Many reasons will be given to obtain your personal info, such as to update your account, or by saying that your recent purchase cannot proceed because some personal data is missed or not confirmed.
+Providing a link and asking you to click on that to transfer that data. Moreover, through some high IT techniques, they will have all the important data related to your money.
How to avoid:
+ Amazon will never send you that kind of email to ask you for your sensitive and private information.
+ Report it instantly when receiving that email.
5. The discount voucher
The most popular scam is to send you an appealing email as a “reward” for being an Amazon loyal customer or for your best reviews ever, or ten
on Amazon.com. You click on that link, and they will take your personal data.
How to avoid:
+ Delete it because Amazon would never send that kind of email.
6. “Write a review for Amazon.com”
Scammers will send you a message via email, which includes some monetary compensation for writing a review on Amazon.com, usually after a big shopping event, like Amazon Prime Day, Christmas Sales, or Black Friday sales. You will be directed to a fake Amazon site which is very similar to the real Amazon.com, but you cannot recognize the difference without paying attention, and though this, your info will be stolen.
