Deshpriya Mukherjee had his schooling at St. Xavier’s, Patna, a well-known educational institution run by the Jesuits. A gold medallist (BSc Chemistry Hons) from Patna University, he surprisingly opted for the Indian Police Service though he had a penchant for teaching and research in chemistry. In police service also, he made a mark in assignments of various nature, such as law and order, crime and anti-corruption work. He rose to the rank of DGP and led the Tamil Nadu Police. He spent more than 14 years in the premier investigating agency CBI and incorporated his rich experience in his first literary effort CBI Headquarters: Victory or Mystery? His effort in Tamil Malarum Ninaivugal also was received well.
His personal life is no less exciting than his official career.  He is a prolific writer contributing short stories and essays to Bengali magazines of cultural outfits. His short stories (comedy) appearing in college magazines brought him popularity in the student community.
The landmark events in his life have been portrayed with clarity and in a simple style.
