As chance would have it, Sanjeev spent his formative years as a young faculty at SDM College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad, an institute which was instrumental in propelling maxillofacial surgery in India to the next level. For six years, he observed from close quarters the gradual expansion of the scope of this speciality.
After a short stint at the UK, Sanjeev settled down in the vicinity of Delhi, heading the departments at dental colleges at Meerut, Muradnagar and Gurgaon. It was while browsing through the old issues of some journals in the library of one of the colleges, that he realized that there was a need to document the stories of pioneers whose efforts have led to the stupendous growth of oral and maxillofacial surgery in India. Although he has written several scientific papers in national and international journals, this is his first attempt at writing a historical text. He is married to Susmita, an Oral Pathologist, and has two beautiful children, a son and a daughter.

Sanjeev Kumar, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) with wide experience in the field, has attempted to chronicle the growth of this speciality in India to fill a void in the history of Indian medical sciences. While a lot of literature is available on ancient Indian medical practices, including Ayurveda, very little seems to have been written about the development of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in India.
