C.N.Pillai (Chandrasekhara Narayana Pillai) was born in 1934 in Kerala, India. After an early education in India, he travelled to the USA for higher studies and research in chemistry, in 1955. After acquiring a Ph.D. from North-western University, Evanston, Illinois, he returned to India in 1961. The onward and return journeys were by ship. In India, after a brief stint in the industry, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Engaged himself in teaching and research for more than 30 years, guided the Ph.D. work of more than twenty students, published more than 100 research papers in scientific journals and published a text book of organic chemistry. He is married to Padmavathi and has three children, a son and two daughters. He has settled in Chennai after retirement, with his family, spends his time reading, writing and walking along the coast of the Bay of Bengal enjoying the sea, the sand, the sun and the breeze and the flora and fauna and the company of friends.
