Since the advent of the 8 bit microprocessor, automation has slowly replaced the manual control of machine tools, and has also led to the interfacing of Work stations with Machines in factories.
With the advent of high speed internet and IOT the field of CIM has now become more important because factories and work stations in remote locations can be linked globally, to produce components and items sequentially or simulataneously as required.

The author was a CSIR Pool Officer at the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, and with several private Industries and Research Industries at California and NC,USA and India. He has participated in SBIR and EPA projects at RTP, NC, USA and at PSG Tech Coimbatore on a DRDO ARDB Project.. As a DRDO Scientist he was in charge of several ARDB funded projects at GTRE, PSGTech and HAL Bangalore. He has taught Robotics and Mechatronics at JNTU and VTU, and has published several papers on Robotics in peer reviewed journals, including several patents in the area of Production pocesses.
