An overview with descriptions of the alternatives to fossil fuels is presented. Sufficient details are given to enable the reader to proceed with constructing or developing items like a biogas digester, designing a wind turbine, solar heater, and other simple technologies. Alternative sources of energy are not high-tech, and even a layman can understand the principles involved.
The enabling of rural technologies should be the aim of even the multinational corporations. Every Indian citizen is enjoined by the Constitution to protect the environment, and one of the essential tools is the knowledge of how alternative sources of energy could be used.
It is hoped that such a study would be of use to students and the general reader.

The author retired from DRDO and held an emeritus professorship from the UGC GOI, N Delhi, having been on the faculty at VTU and JNTU, Katrnataka and A.P. After studies at Caltech, and UCLA, CA, USA he participated in numerous DRDO and other environmental projects in California and the Environmental Protection Agency USA, and received an Honourable Mention from Rolex Awards Switzerland, More recently, he has participated in a competition to design an Ocean Wave power system by the USERDA with other colleagues in California. Several publications resulted from conferences in Bangalore, USA, Mauritius and Jordan (Travel Grants from GOI) , and have appeared in international journals in the areas of Solar Energy, Biogas and Turbomachines
