John Mathai was born and raised in Aymanam, Kottayam, Kerala. He spent his career in Aviation engineering with Indian Airlines, NEPC Airlines, and Gulf Air. After retirement, he joined Hindustan University as an instructor and completed his M. Tech at the age of 62. After the loss of his wife, he found solace in family and the pursuit of knowledge.
