Sundar Balasubramanian
Sundar Balasubramanian is a cell biology researcher and is named one of the world’s leading experts in breathwork. He is the founder of PranaScience Institute. Sundar’s pioneering research provided evidence linking salivary biomarkers and yogic breathing. He studies how breathing practices could promote well-being in health and disease. PranaScience’s current studies include an NIH-funded study for testing a yogic breathing app for cancer survivorship. Additionally, he has developed several tools to improve the practice of pranayama for employee wellness, aging, and scleroderma. His popular TEDx talk, ‘The Science of Yogic Breathing’ has over 1 million views.
Sundar grew up in Karambakkudi, a village in Tamilnadu, India in a traditional yoga and Siddha medicine-practicing family background. Apart from learning from teachers in the family, Sundar expanded his yoga training in various places including Vivekananda Gurukula College, and Vivekananda Kendra in India, and Sri Satchidananda Ashram in the USA. He is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists and the Integral Yoga Teachers Association, and he is an IAYT-certified yoga therapist.
Sundar is the author of four books and several book chapters. His notable books include PranaScience: Decoding Yoga Breathing, and Mind Your Breathing: The Yogi’s Handbook with 37 Pranayama Exercises (available in Tamil, English, and Hindi versions).
