When Adrian Fray of the Bar F had been bushwhacked, the town marshal pointed the finger of suspicion at Marty Savern of the Box S Ranch. He had every motive for killing the young rancher. Cindy Pereira

The Wild West inspired Cindy’s earliest stories, and it is no wonder. Those were the type of books she liked to read. A single girl among three brothers, there weren’t too many ‘fineries’ she wanted. Leather replaced lace and boots were preferred to ballrooms. Born and brought up in the south of India, cowboys and gunfighters were romanticised to the point of believing she was the reincarnation of some saddle-worn puncher-turned-gunfighter, an idea fired by her favourite Wild West litterateurs.

She grew out of the notion; however, her love for writing purely from imagination didn’t.

Initially titled The Guns of Battle Mesa, Bushwhacker was completed in 2003, taking five years, first at a typewriter and then at a computer keyboard. Written for a friend, another Wild West enthusiast, it was bound together with glue but never published.

Cindy’s mother completed the first proofreading and proclaimed her daughter’s labour of love to be a ‘swell book with a beautiful ending.’

Planned as one in a trilogy of Westerns, the remaining two stories are still in rough formats within some dusty journal.

They will be written someday.
