Sujita N. Chatani, commonly known as Teacher Mala, was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, but lived abroad during her younger years. She comes from a middle-class family and has vivid childhood memories of how her parents could not afford a tutor. She finished her grade school in Jakarta, Indonesia, and her high school in Singapore. Her parents decided to relocate to Manila, and Teacher Mala completed her education here.
