The phrase “Internet of Things” (IoT) alludes to the billions of physical devices connected to the Internet in order to exchange raw data and analyze the information. By collecting data from these devices and analyzing them, IoT makes the devices smarter, and the processes more efficient. IoT can bring endless opportunities to every aspect of our lives. For example, in a city environment, insights gained from that collected data can be used to manage resources and services more efficiently, leading to creating the concept of smart city. The city is smart, if it is connected. In a connected city, the traffic and transportation systems are managed more efficiently, the quality of urban services are improved, the performance of processes are enhanced, the consumption of resources are optimized, and the cost of services are reduced.
IoT is in early stages of its life. However, it is growing in a fast pace. As more and more IoT devices are deployed, we witness that every aspect of our lives is changed by the IoT.
This book sets out to introduce the IoT use cases and technologies. To demonstrate the effect of IoT and its potential to change our world, several practical examples are discussed. The book also discusses the existing wired and wireless communication technologies that have enabled IoT.

Prof. M. Madiajagan, completed his B.E. Computer Science and Engineering from University of Madras, Master Degree from BITS Pilani, Rajasthan, India. He completed his Ph.D. from BITS Pilani, Rajasthan, India in the year 2009. Presently he is working as an Associate Profesor in School of Computer Science and Engineering, VIT, Vellore, Tamilnadu. He is having more than 25 years of Teaching experience, out-of 25 years of teaching experience 14 years worked at BITS Pilani as Assistant Professor and than as a Professor In-Charge ICT & Netowrk Infrastructure requirement analyst.
Dr. S. Karthikumar has done his Bachelor of Engineering in EEE from KSR College of Technology under University of Madras in 2000, Master of Engineering in Applied Electronics from KSRCT under Anna University Coimbatore in 2010 and Ph.D from St. Peter's University, Chennai in March 2017. He has 19 years of Experience and presently working as Professor and HoD, EEE at Mangalam College of Engineering, Kottayam, Kerala. His research interest include Embedded Systems, Power Converters, Soft Computing and Optimization.
Dr. Sugandha Singh is Professor, CSE and Dean IIIC at Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management (HITAM), Hyderabad. She received her B.Tech and M.Tech in CSE from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 1999 and 2001 respectively. She received her Ph.D degree from University School of Information and Communication Technology, GGSIPU, Delhi in 2015. She has also done Post Graduate Diploma in Management in HR and PR from Madras University in 2013 and is a certified Business Analyst. She has teaching experience of 22 years.
