The Dream

by Kunal Moon

“Mind wandering is typically associated with negative things like laziness or inattentiveness ” says Prof. Kalina Christoff, UBC Dept. of Psychology.

I had a dream of a mystery girl. Blubbering, she came and needled me with words "Do you remember me ?"

The scene was unlikely, she was not on phone like always, but I could feel her presence. The sorrow within her glittering eye was rolling down to cheek, but her beauty couldn't be disregarded. Pearl white scarf flowed around her rosy dazzling dress. On her bare feet, mystery girl advanced towards me, and motioned her naked hands at me. Blurred vision became clear as she came closer. I could see the pain beneath that beautiful face.

She came closer till I could feel her shallow breath. Her tangled hairs took a hop over my face. I couldn't think hard as what to speak. Something was definitely wrong with her or may be with me. Holding her cold hands, I whispered into her ears, “Yes I remember”

Another unanticipated tear dropped down her eyes listening my words. Gazing on me, she replied, “Why ? Why did you do this to me ?”

I couldn’t comprehend why she said that but it was very clear that she was in tremendous pain due to me.

I must have done something wrong by accident. I do lots of stuff that people would hate me for. My mind went all open and pulled in thoughts of all the worst things I ever did, but it was all blank in consideration with present situation. The best way was to ask her.

“Did I do anything ? Why did you say that ?”

Before she could reply, I started to hear people murmuring in my ears and criticizing me. I felt dizzy as my head exploded with rumination. Everyone was complaining about my bad deeds. My family, college friends, office coworker, everyone was seen like the holographic images floating around me in spaces. Now the pain was grieving on me.

“I didn’t expect this from you ”, she replied.

“You hurt me.”

“You hurt me a lot”

She kept on repeating it until her breathy voice turned to a gravelly voice and she slapped across my face, turning herself into ashes.

I knew I was dreaming but heavy pressure with some invisible forces was jamming my brain to stop dreaming and get up. Meanwhile I rolled over the bed and came to consciousness after falling off the bed.

It is the second time this week, I saw the same dream. I feel guilty of the things I haven't done. The girl’s voice keeps echoing in my head and I even started day dreaming about her.

Once it so happened that I was standing beside a bus stand for catching up a bus and, on hearing her voice, I replied loudly in air, “Sorry, Sorry, Didn’t mean to hurt you ” Everyone standing in the queue looked at me with suspicion. Luckily, a person standing before me thought that I stepped over his foot and said, “it's fine, I am okay”.

I need to stop thinking about her. I have always been an amusing guy and now her rumination are making me insane.

Then suddenly, my ear drums vibrated with a ting. That's my alarm clock. I was dreaming this whole time but the question is, since WHEN ? Does answer lie within the dream ?
