Rekha Mehra’s Zindagi Teri Dhoop Chaon is her first book of poetry.
Coming from a Punjabi Arya Samaj family, her parents fled to Lahore amid the turbulent Partition. The Mumbai-based poet was born in Benares or Kashi, the oldest living city in the world. The family lived in the Holy City for two years before moving to Delhi.
A quiet, sensitive and observant child, she grew up spending summers in her maternal grandparent’s home in Amritsar. The massive yellow mansion, christened as Peeli Kothi, was a receptacle of memories of growing up in a joint family, with all the love and tribulations that come with it. A part of the summer holiday was also spent in Dalhousie, at the family’s ancestral second home, a respite from the oppressive heat of the plains.
A graduate in history from the University of Delhi, she won a scholarship to pursue her post-graduation in sociology from the Delhi School of Economics. Giving up her career opportunities, she instead settled in a life of matrimony, raising three wonderful daughters.
She believes that life needs to be lived with a smile on your face. “An abundant and enriching life is a life of simplicity that is in sync with the universe, with compassion and respect for others.”
Quoting a few lines from her poetry:
“Kitna bhi batoro
Kitna bhi sameto
Unt mein
khali hath sabhi ka.”
Rekha is a prolific reader, delving deep into Hindi literature, poetry and history. An avid gardener, she enjoys spending time in nature and travelling. Through her poetry, she brings peace, joy and contentment from her eyes to the reader’s universe. A diverse world sparkling with pearls of wisdom.
