कर्तव्य विमुख कुमार गंधर्व आत्मसिद्धि हेतु वैराग्य का प्रतिमान स्थापित करने चले थे, किंतु आत्मवंचना के वशीभूत एक नृत्यांगना के प्रेमपाश में बँध गए, वहीं सामाजिक रूप से तिरस्कृत पद्मगंधा ने कर्तव्यपथ का वरण कर यह स्थापित कर दिया कि संसार ही मनुष्य की कर्मस्थली है तथा कर्तव्यपालन ही सर्वोच्च सिद्धि है।

वैराग्य, वासना, उत्सर्ग एक प्रख्यात ऋषि के पतन, एक युवराज के आत्मबोध तथा एक नर्तकी के उत्सर्ग की गाथा है जो हमें मानव मन की विकृतियों तथा उसके दुष्परिणामों से अवगत कराने के साथ-साथ जीवन के यथार्थ से भिज्ञ कराती है।
