The Nutcracker and Other Stories is about a squirrel, Bushy Tail, and his little adventures.
Bushy Tail is a squirrel, who unlike other squirrels does not know how to break open a nut. He prefers climbing trees and claims he simply does not like nuts.
He meets Mr. Beaver, who tells him a story about a turtle that once climbed an oak tree. Bushy Tail decides to climb the tree himself.
A snake, a bunch of ants, and his mother advise
