Sathiya Susuman

A Sathiya Susuman completed his Ph D in Demography from University of Kerala, India. His research efforts are concentrated in the field of population components, such as fertility, mortality, and migration. Keeping abreast of his research aspirations in the field of technical demography, he focuses mainly on the "demography of health”, with attention to a life course analysis of health risks, interventions, and outcomes. He worked as a research officer on the DLHS-RCH project at International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, from 2002 to 2005. Thereafter, he moved to Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, and worked as an Assistant Professor from January 2006 to July 2008. During that period he was involved in a research project for Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey, an in-depth analysis sponsored by UNICEF and the World Bank. He is well versed in computer applications such as SPSS, STATA, MORTPAK, and Atlas ti software.

His core research efforts are concentrated in the field of population components, such as fertility, mortality, and migration. In addition his research interests are in technical demography, gender, reproductive health, vulnerable diseases, HIV/AIDS, health policy, and public health. Sathiya have twelve years of teaching and seventeen years of research experience in the field of demography and population studies. He has successfully completed several research projects. He has strong professional and institutional leadership capacities.

He has successfully produced five PhD and thirty master’s students in demography. He worked on and has published several research articles along with masters’ students. Sathiya published in several leading journals such as in Global Health Action, Genus, BMC Reproductive Health, BMC Research Note, The International Journal of Equity in Health, The Journal of Public Health, SAHARA J: Journal of Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance, The Journal of Social Science Research, The Journal of Asian and African Studies, PLOS One, Clinical Case Report, The Iranian Journal of Public Health, and in other journals and edited volumes. Furthermore, he has participated in social community activities in several societies.

He is a member of Population Association of America, Union for African Population Studies, International Union for Scientific Study of Population, Asian Population Association, Statistics South Africa and Population Association of South Africa. At present he is working as a full time Faculty member of Natural Sciences, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa.
