Understanding clarifies that there is no contradiction between the assertion: ‘one without a second,’ of the Vedanta philosopher and the statement of the critic that ‘we cannot deny the world we live in.’ Consciousness is the real essence of Jiva, but it possesses matter too, which is not the real stuff. This means that one part of the Jiva is authentic but the other is not. We should say then that ‘we do not question existence but question its authenticity.’
