It provides a suitable background for graduates in chemistry who are just entering the pharmaceutical industry. This practical manual has been written not only to enhance students understanding of chemistry, but also to capture data and take observations. In this book, introduction to medicinal chemistry, safety measures to be taken, basic equipment and instrumentation was described. In Part A, according to the PCI syllabus synthesis of compounds has been described clearly starting from the aim, requirements, principle, procedure and calculations. The schemes and the reactions involved in the synthetic procedure were described. Followed by Assay of some compounds i.e., percentage purity of marketed compounds and the analytical techniques was discussed. Partition coefficient of benzoic acid and paracetamol was discussed. Determination of physiochemical properties and drawing of drugs structures was discussed along with the synthesis and assays of given compounds in Part B.
The practical manual provides the newly qualified graduates with an understanding of new developments as they take place in future years. Any suggestions for future development of the book are most welcome and will be highly appreciated.

Dr Sunitha Basa, M Pharm, Ph.D, is an Associate professor in Malla Reddy College of Pharmacy, Maisammaguda, Secunderabad, Telangana. She has over 15 years of teaching experience in various chemistry subjects like Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry, Chemistry of Natural Products, Pharmacoinformatics, etc. She has 32 research and review articles in national and international journals and participated in over 43 conferences, seminars and workshops. She also guided 12 M.Pharmacy project students.
