Pitambar Das started his career as a teacher at Government High School Pottangi, Koraput, Odisha. He joined Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and worked for more than thirty-four years as a teacher in English and Principal. He took voluntary retirement as the principal and joined Vikash Residential School, Bhubaneswar, in the same position. Subsequently, he became the dean of academics of Vikash Group of Institutions, functioning at Bargarh, Bhubaneswar, Bhawanipatna, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Rourkela. He looks after all the academic aspects of the CBSE affiliated schools of the group.
