Subrat SaurabhAuthor of Kuch Woh PalHealthcare or hospital waste poses adverse effects on human health and the environment. Its proper disposal is vital for individual and community health. Healthcare waste contains many strains of bacteria and virus, and is potentially hazardous. Its proper collection, treatment and disposal is important to prevent spread of infection. Unfortunately, it remains a neglected area. There are many reasons, but the most important is lack of applied knowledge, and deficient implementation.
Laljee Verma was commissioned to write a book on healthcare waste management by the department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and a book entitled ‘Managing Healthcare Waste-A Practical Approach’ was published in 2007. Sensing that many healthcare workers may not be proficient in English, this Hindi version of the book is being brought out. The book explains environmental degradation that can happen due to deficient healthcare waste management. It sites deficiencies, success stories and case studies in India, and South East Asia Region countries.
Doctors, nurses, paramedics, and waste handlers are the stakeholders in overall management of healthcare waste. Therefore, it is important that apart from doctors, nurses, paramedics, and waste handlers appreciate the implication of deficient healthcare waste management.
