In 2010, Sam Kumar started a photography project, ‘Environmental Dance’, which combined his two passions – Nature and Dance. He photographed dancers in graceful movement in outdoor locations such as forests, mountains, parks, temples and monuments. Taking them away from their comfort zone of the stage or studio, Sam Kumar asked the dancers to react to the outdoor environment. The dancers were not posing for his picture but ‘dancing’ when the pictures were taken. Though it felt strange initially, the dancers quickly reacted to nature and enjoyed the shoots. All the dancers confided to him that it was a deeply satisfying experience for them!
Over the years, Sam Kumar held many solo exhibitions of his Environmental dance photos at art galleries in Singapore, Thailand and India. In February 2021, Sam Kumar published his first photography book ENVIRONMENTAL DANCE. It consists of 126 pages of photographs of dance in nature which had shot with 18 international dancers from India, Holland, US, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. The images were captured in multiple locations in India, Singapore, Bali and Thailand between 2010 and 2019.

Sam Kumar
After graduating in Electronics Engineering at Madras Institute of Technology, Sam Kumar obtained his Masters degree in Computer Science atIIT, Mumbai.During two decades of international IT career, he lived and worked in US, Australia, UK, Holland and Singapore. During this period he learnt film making and photography from internationally known masters and attended several courses and workshops. He had participated in many group exhibitions in US Singapore. He held 3 solo Photography exhibitions in Singapore.
In 2010 he returned home to Chennai and founded MIRAGE FILMS a multi-media production house which makes Corporate Films, Music videos and Documentary films. It also produces show-reels for actors, singers and dancers.
In the same year, he established MIRAGE FILM INSTITUTE (www.mirage-films.com) to share his knowledge. It offers part time online classes and workshops on film making and photography.
