Subrat SaurabhAuthor of Kuch Woh PalImagine a life without the ability to remember events, names, colors, sounds and scenes! Imagine if you are unable to remember pleasant dreams! Imagine if you failed to remember the last days of your life! Certainly, life without a sharp memory would have been colorless.
Sharp memory serves us in various ways. In schools, memory helps us to store and retrieve information and facts whenever needed. As a professional, memory helps us keep track of various activities and learn from past experiences. Memory helps our domestic life to track the characteristics of various individuals, events and places. Smriti helps calm the mind by remembering pleasant days, proverbs, people, loved ones and celebrations. Before we move on, let's take a brief look at how memory actually works and which parts of our brain combine to make it work properly.
Cognitive psychology divides human memory into three different storage systems i.e. sensory storage, short term storage and long term storage.
Sensory: This type of storage system has unlimited capacity. The system facilitates the storage of scenes and sounds. Unless the visual or sound is highly significant, this storage does not occur in the long term. The level of concentration actually determines the retrieval of these memory bits.
