Subrat SaurabhAuthor of Kuch Woh PalImagine a life without the ability to remember the events, names, colors, sounds and images! Imagine not being able to remember the pleasant dreams! Imagine not remembering the previous days of your life! Without a keen memory, life would certainly have been colorless.
Sharp memory serves us in several ways. In the schools, the memory helps us to store and retrieve the information and facts when needed. As a professional, memory helps us keep track of various activities and learn from past experiences. Memory helps our home life to keep track of the characteristics of different individuals, events and places. The memory also helps to relax the mind by remembering the pleasant days, sayings, people, loved ones and celebrations. Before we proceed, let's take a quick look at how memory actually works and which parts of our brain combine to make it work properly.
According to cognitive psychology, human memory is usually divided into three different storage systems:
Sensory:This type of storage system has unlimited capacity. The memory stored in this store is based on exactly what is seen or heard (visual and auditory); is only retained for a limited time.
Short term: Selective attention determines what information to transfer from sensory memory to short term memory. In this storage system, memory is usually stored as sounds, especially when recalling words, but it can also be stored as images.
