Physics of Sound waves and Music

Author Name: R. Ranjith | Format: Paperback | Genre : Reference & Study Guides | Other Details

Sound and music are parts of our everyday sensory experience. Just as humans have eyes for the detection of light and color, so we are equipped with ears for the detection of sound. The basis for an understanding of sound, music and hearing is known as Physics of waves. A sound wave is a pattern of disturbance caused by the movement of energy traveling through a medium, such as air, water, or any other liquid or solid matter. Sound waves are longitudinal waves, which means that the propagation of vibration of particles is parallel to the energy wave propagation direction. Sound is produced when an object vibrates, creating a pressure wave. This pressure wave causes particles in the surrounding medium to have vibrational motion. As the particles vibrate, they move nearby particles, transmitting the sound further through the medium. The movement of molecules in a medium is essential for the propagation of sound waves. Sound waves are mechanical waves because they need a material medium for propagation, like air or liquids like water, or metals like silver. This book is divided into five chapters, the first and second chapter describes the nature and properties of sound waves, the third and fourth chapter describes the behavior of sound waves, resonance and standing waves. At final the fifth chapter describes the Physics of musical instruments.
