Ravindran PN/Dr is an Indian scientist, author and writer, best known for his contributions in the field of Spices research and documentation as well as in the field of the plant heritage of India.
Ravindran was a member of the Indian Agricultural Research Service (IARS) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and retired from active government service as the National Coordinator for Spices Research. After retiring from the ICAR service, he became the Founder Director of the Centre for Medicinal Plants Research at Kottakkal and then for seven years served as the Research Advisor for TATA Global Beverages, Bangalore. He left the TATAs when CABI commissioned him to write the first scientific encyclopaedia on herbs and spices.
The Encyclopaedia of Herbs and Spices is a single-authored scientific encyclopaedia, the first of its kind in the area of herbs and spices. CABI has brought it out as a 2-volume set, and it is regarded now as the most authoritative document on all the spices used by humankind. In addition, he had in his credit five monographs (published by Taylor & Francis and CRC Press), one data base compilation and over 300 research and review papers. Dr Ravindran was the founder of the Indian Society for Spices and the founder-editor of the Journal of Spices and Aromatic Crops.
