Arati Samajpati

A lifelong student of literature, Arati Samajpati has been writing from a very young age. She has done her Master’s, both in Bengali and in English literature. Born in 1946, Arati spent her growing-up years in the quaint town of Hooghly in West Bengal. Her house was at a stone’s throw from the banks of the river Ganga, one of her favourite places as a child. Arati moved to the state of Gujarat after her marriage but continued to stay in touch with her roots. As President and Founding member of the Purbasha Cultural Association in Gandhinagar, she has been helping bring Bengali culture, art and food to the people in the capital.Arati has been actively involved in the social sector as well, working in the areas of non-formal education and health. She has authored papers and represented India at many international forums, including the UN Special Session on HIV/AIDS at its General Assembly in New York, USA in 2001.With ‘Songs of Life’, her first published book, Arati hopes to take Rabindranath Tagore’s epic work to more people. While transcreating thirty two of Tagore’s Nobel-prize winning poems in English, she has tried to retain the essence and emotion of the originals, but kept the language simple and lucid, making it easy for everyone to experience a bit of Tagore.
