Compilation - Dr Ashok Banerji
Swami Vivekananda (12/1/1863 – 4/7/1902) propagated the essence of humanity, best expressed in Advaita Vedanta philosophy. It is indeed difficult to narrate his contributions in a few words. In him, we can find a spiritual guide, revivalist of Sanatan Hinduism, patriot, philosopher and so many others. His arrival not only created a new life in India and the world at a juncture when materialism was eroding the ancient religious foundations. He propagated the ancient wisdom of Vedas and Puranas and established the age-old wisdom in a new light in India as also in the West. All benefited from his teachings of the timeless message of India's treasures. His words continue to inspire us even today.
Sister Nivedita commented in 1907 in the introduction of the Complete Works of Swamiji – “Long after the English language has disappeared from India, the gift that has here been made, through that language, to the world, will remain and bear its fruit in East and West alike.”
