Jemima Caleb's chief thematic concerns are with the trials and tribulations of oppressed women in the male-dominated Indian society. She stated in one of her poems that, only her loss of individuality and entity after her father's demise made her center around the trauma of typical Indian women, and their efforts to preserve their identity as a daughter, a wife, a mother, and more than anything else, a human being. Having been brought up by a single mother since her late teens, she became increasingly aware of the plight of women that are commonly unnoticed by society.
