DELHI IN THE ERA OF REVOLUTIONARIES 1857-1947

Author Name: Bhuvan Lall | Format: Paperback | Genre : History & Politics | Other Details

The Indian freedom struggle spanning across continents is one of the most significant events in human history. In the resistance against British rule, the ancient city of Delhi played a pivotal role. The First War of Independence – the Ghadr of 1857, was launched from Delhi. The bomb outrage in Chandni Chowk in 1912 captured India’s imagination and motivated Har Dayal’s Ghadr Party in California. In 1945, the trial of Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army officers at the Red Fort in Delhi wrecked the despotic British Empire worldwide. And the Indian tricolor was hoisted at Delhi’s Red Fort on 16 August 1947.

The history of India’s independence movement is also the story of everyday common folks in Delhi. Between 1857–1947, there were countless Dilliwallahs – old and young, mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, poor and rich – who acted with courage and conscience in a world falling apart around them. They came from all walks of life and were the truest reflection of India. The silent, selfless, and spirited revolutionaries of Delhi made extraordinary sacrifices for India’s liberation. We must not forget these nameless, faceless and unsung women and men even as their achievements slipped into yesteryears’ shadows. Their audacity, brilliance, creativity, and devotion brought freedom to millions and changed the course of world history.

We remain inspired by their martyrdom. This is their story.
