This book is on the Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Crime Against Women (CAW) in West Bengal (WB). It is written to determine the context of any crime corresponding to the knowledge of space and time and be considered. Where, when certain types of crime occurred is the prime consideration of understanding crime events. Hence this book will:
1. Address Crime Against Women event from geographical perspectives.
2. Focus on understanding the socio-economic and environmental factors responsible for the occurrence of Crime Against Women in WB.
3. Analyze spatial pattern of CAW in WB.
4. Do physical, environmental zoning to relate the occurrence of CAW in a different environmental setting which will be the first of its kind in India.
5. Focus on border areas crime with special reference to women trafficking and flesh trade.
6. Analyze district-wise detailed analysis of CAW to portray the differential causes and types of CAW in WB.
7. Predict crime hotspot areas using geospatial and statistical models.
8. Help the criminologist and police personnel to determine potential crime sites by examining complex, seemingly unrelated criteria and displaying them all in a graphical, layered, spatial interface or map.
9. Be effectively helpful to plan and prevent crime from further occurrence which will be the first of its kind in West Bengal as well as in India.
Nilanjana Das Chatterjee
Dr. Nilanjana Das Chatterjee is a Professor and former HOD in the Department of Geography, Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, India. She received her Ph.D. award from Burdwan University in 2009. She is an expert in the field of biogeography, environmental aspects of resource and hazard related issues, urban geography, landscape ecology with special reference to elephant migration and its consequences in forest fringes, tribal culture and women’s studies. She has nearly 20 years of experience in research and teaching and has authored more than 65 research publications in SCI and Peer Reviewed Journals. She has also received many prestigious awards. She is one of the twenty women scientists recognized by the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. She is an enthusiastic IUCN Commission member for CEM. Six research scholars achieved their Ph.D. award and eight students completed their M. Phil. dissertation under her supervision. She has completed a major project funded by the ICSSR, New Delhi. Now she has completed a research program funded by the ICSSR on ‘A Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Crime Against Women in Selected Districts of West Bengal (1980-2015): A Geospatial Perspective’. She is the author of the book, ‘Man Elephant Conflict: A Case Study from the Forests in West Bengal, India,’ published in 2016. Being a devoted teacher, her passion is to maintain a good student-teacher relationship.
