These are digestive system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, reproductive system, excretory system, skeletal system endocrine and nervous system. The functioning of different organs associated with these systems is closely interlinked. To sustain life, we need to have a perfect functioning of all these systems. However, many a time, it is not so. We get some physiological disturbances in the smooth running of metabolic activities related to some of these systems. It is manifested in one or the other disorders (diseases).
In the earlier century, we witnessed infectious diseases (like tuberculosis, plague, cholera) caused due to infection by some pathogens. These were mainly treated by antibiotics and other similar drugs. The present time has been dominated by chronic degenerative disorders; prominently cancer, diabetes, coronary artery disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cataracts, etc. These are in no way infectious; hence, they do not spread from one person to the other. These chronic disorders greatly affect our quality of life. Oxidative stress is the root cause of all such problems. The use of antioxidants may help us greatly in keeping these problems at bay.
The understanding of human body systems, and disorders related to them, have been discussed in this book in a simplified manner.
Dr. Brahma Nand Dahiya
For about more than three decades, Dr. Brahma Nand Dahiya has been associated with Plant Improvement research and related teaching with CCS, Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar (Haryana).
He has been teaching graduate and post graduate classes there. He also guided a couple of students for completing their post graduate degree programs.
Based on his research work, he developed several improved hybrids/varieties of cereal and legume crops. (Notably hybrids HHB 50, HHB 60 and HHB 67 of pearl millet; and Muskaan of green gram). Many key germplasm lines of barley are registered in the name of Dr. Brahma Nand Dahiya with the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR, New Delhi) for their further use in plant improvement and genetic research.
The research work of Dr. Dahiya has been published in journals of national and international repute (like Theoretical and Applied Genetics; Indian Journal of Genetics and Plant Breeding; Indian Journal of Plant Sciences; Legume Research). He has more than fifty such research articles to his credit.
