This is the story of Sri Annamalai Swami, a disciple of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, one of the greatest and most widely respected Gurus that India has ever produced. His powerful presence, his radical teaching of self-inquiry and his exemplary life are even today still attracting new followers. Annamalai Swami was a direct disciple who moved closely with him over a period of many years. This is his story. It is an inspiring and moving account of what it was like to live and work in the close presence of Sri Ramana.
This is a classic Guru-disciple encounter, an arduous spiritual journey which highlights the grace of the Guru and the activities of the community that surrounds him. Annamalai Swami himself became enlightened by the grace of his Guru and had scores of devotees of his own. For over 50 years he never left his small ashram compound next door to Sri Ramanasramam, the ashram of his beloved Guru, where he attained Mahasamadhi on November 9, 1995.
Sri Annamalai Swami
When a young Annamalai Swami came to Bhagavan with nothing more than a desire to know the Truth, these were Bhagavan’s words: “I was waiting for you. I was wondering when you would come.” For the next 14 years, Annamalai Swami served Bhagavan faithfully, surrendering his body, mind and soul to his Guru. And Bhagavan from day one kept a watchful eye on the disciple, making sure nothing would distract him from the path that he carefully laid out for him. There are numerous examples in this book of the care that Bhagavan took for his disciple, all narrated by Annamalai Swami himself.
Thousands of devotees came to Bhagavan. Many of them became his disciples, some even staying close to him. As Annamalai Swami had totally surrendered at the holy feet of Bhagavan he was blessed with the extra care and support from Bhagavan till the end. It is no surprise at all then, that Annamalai Swami attained liberation by the grace of Bhagavan.
