Ram got out of bed mechanically; he was wearing a checked lungi and white kurta, ‘Rampyari… you are her now’ she reminded him… He stood facing the full length dressing table mirror and took off his white kurta and cotton vest and stood naked waist up…

Her flat chest and arms had a few scattered scant hair… ‘It will all go’ her Guru had told her, ‘but how?’ She didn’t have a clue!

Ram’s gaze wandered to his head, ‘bring the razor… let me shave this bloody eunuch…’

The past came hitting hard again…

She put her palms on his ears to block out the echoes but could the echoes of the past be drowned forever? Would the cruel past that had mercilessly handed him into the custody of a dark future always haunt her?

She let his pyjama fall to the floor and saw herself in the skin... Ram saw her reflection in the mirror but did not see himself… he was Ram indeed… but…  She was not what he was and he did not feel like HER yet…

Gittanjali A Singh

Gittanjali is a practicing Master Numerologist and Consultant for more than two decades now. She was on the Panel of Celebrity Experts at TOI from 2000 to 2013. Her book ‘…and God Spoke in Numbers…’ of which the second edition was released is one of the bestselling books on numerology. This book was authored by her in her maiden name (GITTANJALI ELIZABETH MORDECAI).

It was in the late 1990’s that she encountered some eunuchs and was moved by their plight and predicament. She interviewed a few of them and got to learn each one’s true and horrific story and journey from birth to where they stood then… their unrecognized existence as normal human beings constantly subjected to atrocities and ridicule, shamed, shunned, feared and degraded in society, their abject misery and poverty, moved her emotionally. She decided to compile all the facts she gathered from and weave their lives into a touching tale that aimed at humanizing this ostracized community labelled as ‘A Criminal Tribe’ since the 1870’s.

At the time when she wrote this manuscript, no one was not ready to accept them in the mainstream of society and treated them like some freaks of nature… which they are not. Only two genders were recognized and given all constitution rights in India…the third gender was denied its very existence.

A couple of rejections of her manuscript from various publishers told her that it was too premature to publish a subject such as this in the early 2000’s…BUT NOW…when humanity has awakened to the deprived and damned existence of this rejected humans, to the unconstitutional denial of their rights and has accepted them as the Third Gender in God’s creation….she feels this story must be heard.
