Mumtaz Alam
Dr Mumtaz Alam is currently an Assistant Professor in History and Head of School- Arts and Humanities, Fiji National University, Fiji. He received his PhD from Aligarh Muslim University and worked as project Fellow at the Centre of Advanced Study Department of History before joining Fiji National University. His research interest includes medical history in Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and their connection with colonial and post-colonial contexts. Alam’s work seeks to bring together social history and medical history, as well as oral testimonies and written records in dialogue with each other. His book entitled ‘Health, Medicine, and the encounter of cultures in India’ published in 2022 from Primus Publication. He is a member of Indian History Congress (IHC), Pacific History Association (PHA), American Historical Association (AHA), Australian and New Zealand Society of the History of Medicine (ANZSHM) etc. He awarded the Prize for Best Paper under section Science and Technology in the Indian History Congress in 2011. He published many research papers in peer-reviewed Journals and an active researcher. Presently, he is working on the social and cultural contexts of venereal diseases, Smallpox vaccination in Fiji, Environmental History, climate history and Ecotourism. He holds editorial positions in numerous international journals of distinction. He is teaching history and its broader area like Nationalism in the Pacific, Migration, Culture and Identity, Culture and Community Adaptation to Climate Change and Interdisciplinary Studies.
