The book begins with an account of how peaceful the village was, and it goes on to describe how corruption, terrorism, religious fanaticism, communalism and superstition took root and multiplied in the society. Each chapter ends with points to reflect upon. The book leaves the reader with the conclusion that all people are born good and that it is their circumstances that corrupt them.
The book analyses the causes of the evils that haunted the Attinkars, and it explains why they were exploited. It concludes that value-based education is the panacea for all the problems in the village.
The Tale of the Village: Attinkara narrates how Ramu, Nassir, Tom, John, Rajan and Raghu, who were men from different communities, come together to reestablish unity in their village.
Dr. A. Antony
Antony was born in a small village in Kerala on 13 June 1938. He did his schooling in a local vernacular school and completed his higher education in Fatima Mata National College, Kollam. After graduation, he became a teacher in Saint Antony’s High School in 1958. During this period, he obtained his B.Ed. from Kerala University (K.U.) and M.A. in English from Banaras Hindu University. In 1963, he became a lecturer in his alma mater. He went on to become the head of the English department. During this period, he obtained his MPhil and PhD from Kerala University and MEd from Pune University. He was a member of the Syndicate of K.U. Upon his retirement, K.U. appointed him as the principal of its Teacher Education College in Kollam, where he worked for twenty years.
He has written ten books on various aspects of teacher education and the teaching profession. Two of his books have been translated into Malayalam and one of them has been published by the Language Institute, Govt. of Kerala. This is his second book published by Notion Press, the first being Teacher and Education in Indian Society.
He is happily married to his wife Annamma.
