Ashtadhyay is considered to be the main of the six Vedangas. The Ashtadhyay has eight chapters and each chapter has four padas. The first and second chapters contain formulas on nouns and definitions and also regulatory cases of the interrelationship of verbs and noun words in the sentence, such as atmanepada-parasmapada cases for verbs, and inflection, compounds, etc. for nouns. The third, fourth and fifth chapters prescribe all kinds of suffixes. The third chapter deals with the definition of verbs by adding suffixes to nouns and the fourth and fifth chapters deal with the detailed definition of new noun words formed by adding suffixes to nouns. The sixth, seventh and eighth chapters deal with the changes which take place in the letters of the word. These changes are either due to suffixes added to the root word or due to conjugation. The constitutive formulas of duality, conjugation, conjunction, vowel, prefix, deletion, dirgha etc. are given in the sixth chapter. From the fourth verse of the sixth chapter to the end of the seventh chapter there is a special chapter called Angadhikara which describes the changes which occur in the root words due to the suffix or in the suffix due to the root word. These changes are also seen as legislation of dirgha, hrasva, lopa, agama, adesha, guna, vruddhi, etc. In the eighth chapter, the diphthongs, pluralization and shattva and natva of sentential words are specially instructed.
